There are plenty of references to the Davis surname at Radley. Some are certainly connected to this Davis family, some may later be shown to be connected and others will remain in the “just don’t know” category.
First there is the memorial plaque in St James church which clearly identifies the nucleus of a family including Elizabeth, widow of William. Then there is the grave in the churchyard of James Morris Davis and his family. In her will Elizabeth leaves “all those my cottages or Tenements with the garden orchard and appurtenances thereunto adjoining situate and being at Thrupp to” James Morris, her son and an executor.
An article in Jackson's Oxford Journal tells where and how William died in 1822 but also that his home was East St Helens Street, Abingdon and that he was returning “from his farm at Radley”. Related entries in the Parish Register of Radley and St Helens, Abingdon combine to build a family tree starting with the births of the brothers John and William Davis around 1764 and 1772 respectively based on their ages at death.
The Radley Parish Registers show that Gabriel and Elizabeth (nee Saunders), married on 26 May 1763, were the parents of John & William. Gabriel Davis died on 12 May 1804 aged 62 . He was born at Sunning well on 31st Dec 1741, son of John & Hannah.
A William Davis died in 1747 and his son, John above, was the residual beneficiary. In the parish register William is referred to as “Mr W D senior”. An earlier baptismal entry is “William son of William & Mary Davis of Barton, agric”.
Thus we have: William d 1747 father of - John d 1763 father of - Gabriel d 1804 father of William d 1822 father of WHD.
